How To Make a Turbo Charger Inside a Car Engine Last Longer

Posted on 03:33 by Unknown

If you want the turbo charger inside your car's engine to last longer because you don't want to spend loads of money on repairing or replacing it, there are ways to do that. A brand new turbo charger can cost more than £500, which is without the fitting cost. So if i were you i would to what i can to increase the lifespan of the turbo.

1)The first 30 seconds when you start the car engine when it is cold, you can cause damage to the turbo charger. So you need to make sure that the turbo charger is lubricated with the required amount of oil around the bearings found inside the turbo charger. To make sure that happens, when you start your car up, leave the engine running for at least 30 seconds. Also reduce the amount of boost the turbo charger produces when you start to drive your car, this can be done by having a boost control to tweak down the boost pressure. Lowering the boost pressure enhances the oil pressure at the beginning of driving your car; this will make sure the bearings get lubricated and make the engine run sweet.

2)When you have finished driving your car and you switch off the engine immediately, the turbo will be at a hot temperature, so don’t make it go hungry for oil and water. To prevent this from happening to it, when you park your car up, leave the engine running for 4 minutes before you turn it off. If you do this you will make the water and oil reach to the turbo charger more effectively because they will be pumped round the blowers, as the turbo reaches a cool temperature.

3)Make sure you use proper oil for your car engine, the turbo gets really hot after hard work, if you pop the hood you can see it glowing bright orange. So always use quality oil, the two that I will recommend you to use is either semi-synthetic or fully synthetic, the choice is up to you. Also make sure that the oil is changed on a regular basis, at least every 6000 miles your car does. If it is not changed, the oil will be dirty and that dirt can get in contact with the bearing inside the turbo charger. So make sure you regularly top the engine up with fresh quality oil, including an oil filter change.

4)Make sure the remap on the ecu has correct fuel and ignition timings when you are increasing the boost of the turbo charger to gain more power. Wrong times can cause too much air to be force into the motor; this can cause the air and fuel to mix not mix correctly. This can cause damage to the turbo charger and the pistons, so get your car on a dyno, so you can make 100% they are correct. From the dyno run print out, you can find out if the mixture of air and fuel needs to be adjusted.

5)Make sure you have a dump/blow valve fitted with the turbo charger because this prevents the turbo compressor wheel to stall, when you change into different gears. A dump/blow valve is fitted so it releases excess pressure that is produced in the turbo pipe, this will also help towards increase the life span of the turbo charger.
