If you have been using your PSP console, the screen is black and the console is frozen, you can't power off the device using the power switch button. This is because the firmware has locked up due to an unknown error during operation of the console. This can become a problem because leaving your PSP console in this state can cause the battery life to gradually decrease. Don't panic though its nothing serious, all you need to do is manually turn off the PSP console by removing the battery pack and the problem will no longer occur.
1) Remove both the UMD game disc and memory stick from the console. You are required to remove both of them to prevent further damage occurring to the firmware on the system.
2) You will need to gain access to the battery compartment. So turn your PSP console upside down with the screen and buttons facing downwards. You might want to place the console onto a soft towel to prevent the screen getting scratched.
3) Look at the battery lid, you will see a small button that says 'Push'. Pressing this button will release the battery lid, so using your finger press down that button. While pressing the button, slide the battery lid towards the left to remove it from the back of the console.
4) Insert your finger nails into the sides of the battery pack, pull it upwards and pry it out. Once removed, leave it out for 10 seconds and then reinsert it back in. This will disconnect the power going into the PSP console refreshing the system, which will force it turn off.
