A smoke alarm is powered from a 9 volt battery that is connected to a battery snap inside the smoke alarm. On average, a smoke alarm that is powered by a battery lasts about one year, if you leave the same battery in it for more than one year, you are taking a risk because it might not have enough power to trigger the smoke alarm to warn you if there is a fire in your house. So if it has been more than a year and you have tested your smoke alarm battery and the fire detector alarm seems to work fine, still replace the battery with a brand new one, even if it still works. It is not worth taking the risk, as a smoke detector can save your life, so pay the 50p for a new battery and don't cry about it.
