If the umd drive, when active makes loud mechanical noises and you find it too loud, there are a few things you can do to help eliminate the loudness of the psp umd disc drive, the solutions are just below:
2)Sometimes the rail that the laser moves on, can get stiff and increase the amount of noise the umd drive makes. Firstly you will need to dissemble the umd drive and the get some oil that acts as a lubricant and gently pour it onto the rails. This will lubricate the rails, therefore making the laser move up and down smoother on the rails, which will help reduce the grinding noise.
1)This doesn't apply for the psp fat 1000 model. Go into the XMB menu and system settings and find the setting that allows you to turn on umd cache. Turning on umd cache will reduce the amount of the umd drive to read the umd disc, as the psp acts as a temporary storage place for the umd files that are on the disc, which makes the umd drive operate more quietly. Enabling umd cache will also increase the lifespan of the laser.
