Loads of people say that if a speaker doesn't have a protection grill placed in front of it, you will hear a reduction in the sound quality. That is not true, a speaker grill is used to protect the speaker cone from getting squashed and cracked, protecting the actual speaker, so instead the speaker grill will get squashed and not the speaker. A speaker grill also helps to prevent dust getting into the rubber surround, also through the dust cap and into the voice coil. If a speaker has no protection grill placed in front of it, the sound quality will be no different, the only difference is your speaker will not be protected and is in the risk of getting damaged, from everyday use.
